NOFARS  Balanced   Modulator

Volume LVII, Number 6                                                                                       JUNE 2022

The North Florida Amateur Radio Society meeting is Thursday, June 9th.   It starts at 7PM at Hogan Baptist Church, 8045 Hogan Rd.   Rajesh, K4SK will be demonstrating WSJT-X for use with FT8 and other weak signal modes and John Reynolds, W4IJJ will speak about power generators.

Improvements at the City of Jacksonville radio site in the Wells Fargo Tower are in progress. Purchase orders with contractors are being finalized and renovations are expected to start in June.   The W4IZ 146.7 transmit power amplifier is being replaced causing temporary reduction of coverage.   Interruptions in service may result when equipment is repositioned.   Normal Echolink should continue when RF access is not available.

Thanks to these hams for assisting at the W4IZ site: Steve WA4B,   Henry WB4LEQ,  Bob KS4CA,   Herb N4YHS,  Todd K1KVA,   Paul KB4PML,   Steve KD4SMF,   Dan KK4JVV.

Duval ARES and NOFARS are taking part in ARRL Field Day June 25-26 at Hogan Baptist Church, 8045 Hogan Rd.   Todd Lovelace, K1KVA is organizing Jax FD.   He invites all interested to attend and participate.   Emphasis on solar power continues in 2022.   Last year, a huge array of panels and storage batteries powered several transmitters.   No mechanical generators were used.

Antenna installation begins on Friday, June 24th.   If you can assist, help is needed starting midday.   Monitor the Weds. Duval ARES net at 7:30pm on the 146.7 W4IZ repeater for details.   A ham license is not required to participate and newcomers can learn a lot about station installation and operation at FD 2022.   Station set-up continues Saturday morning at the site until the 24-hour Field Day operating period starts at 2pm.   FD operators make contact with other portable installations through out the U.S. and Canada.

MAY NOFARS MEETING:   Brandi, K4PL spoke about weak signal communications in Amateur Radio.   By using a variety of WSJT-X modes, even operators with simple antennas and low power can make contacts with assistance from personal computer hardware and software.   The hamspots.net web site is a good starting point.   Rajesh, K4SK will demonstrate software capabilities at the June meeting.   Todd, K1KVA spoke about the upcoming Field Day which is June 25-26 in the recreation area at Hogan Baptist Church.   Set-up starts Friday afternoon and operation continues through Sunday morning.   All are welcome to participate.   Henry, WB4LEQ detailed changes at the W4IZ repeater site downtown as the city upgrades its capability.

FCC EXAMS:     Eleven prospective hams took exams at the May 21st Jax Laurel session.   Seven new Technicians passed and another went from zero to General. One Technician advanced to Amateur Extra.   The next testing will be on Saturday, June 4th at UF Health.   See the JaxLaurel.com web site.   Testing remains free but applicants will need to pay FCC their $35 application fees.

JAX CAP:   Jacksonville Civil Air Patrol is seeking radio operators and individuals who may be familiar with using DF equipment.   No pre-qualifications necessary; training is provided.   Meetings are held every Thursday evening from 7:30pm to 8:30pm at 10786 Craig Blvd at Jacksonville Executive Airport.   The Civil Air Patrol is the auxiliary of the US Air Force with a primary mission to provide emergency assistance for our communities as well as to educate our future aerospace leaders.   For more, e-mail Elijah Beggs, KO4OUI at beggseli@protonmail.com and access gocivilairpatrol.com
